How long is an alpaca pregnant?

Alpacas and llamas are pregnant for about 342 days, plus or minus 10. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives a range of 332 to 352 days and notes that alpacas tend to be a little shorter than llamas.

The Merck camelid chapter gives these figures. Its general table lists llamas and alpacas at 11.5 months.

How to use the cria calculator

Enter the mating date. The tool adds 342 days for the due date and shows the 332 to 352 day window. The calendar lists the spit off test and ultrasound dates.

Merck notes that more than 70% of normal births happen in the morning, and that dystocia is uncommon.

Alpaca due date formula

Due date equals mating date plus 342 days. An alpaca mated on January 1, 2026 is due about December 9, 2026. The window runs from day 332 to day 352.

Due date = mating date + 342 days

Pregnancy checks for alpacas and llamas

A pregnant female usually rejects the male from about 15 days after mating. Transrectal ultrasound or a progesterone test can confirm pregnancy from about 21 days. Ultrasound through the belly works from 45 to 60 days.

These timings come from the Merck Veterinary Manual. Rectal palpation is practical in llamas after 45 days, but usually not safe in alpacas.
